Southwesterly, 25 to 35mph; strongest across the Yorkshire Dales where perhaps locally 40mph for a time.

Risk rain becoming heavy Yorks Dales

Patches of drizzle, mostly across the western Yorks Dales. Elsewhere, only rare spots of drizzle. Later in the afternoon, steadier rain will develop across all areas as a cold front moves down from the northwest.

Cloud on the hills?

Most persistent western Yorks Dales

Extensive hill fog across the hills above 400-600m, lowest bases western Yorks Dales. Some local breaks developing for a time across Peak District and perhaps the eastern Dales, before cold front arrives.

Glimpses of sun mostly eastern valleys. Visibility locally good for a time, but often murky on western hills, particularly in drizzle.

Temperature (at 600m)

5 to 7C, but may lower to 2C from northwest by evening.

Reaching 11 to 15C, warmest eastern valleys. If rain develops from northwest, dropping several degrees.

Planning Outlook

Colder conditions over the weekend with freezing levels ranging between 700 and 1000m. Snow or hail showers focused on W Scotland, becoming increasingly frequent through Sunday when another swathe of gales will affect the Highlands. Drier elsewhere, with just a few showers; these mainly across the Lakes and E Scotland. Into next week, higher pressure will extend across the UK bringing a period of quieter weather with lighter winds and occasional sunshine. Temperatures slowly rising by day, although frosts forming in the valleys/glens at night. Weak fronts may edge into W Scotland at times introducing some low cloud and drizzle here for a time.
