Headline, The West Highlands

Showery rain and low cloud. Light wind.

How Windy?

Generally northwest veering northerly. 10 to 15mph at first, but by afternoon widely less than 10mph.

Effect Of Wind?

Negligible.

How Wet?

Patchy rain; small risk lightning

Patchy showery rain will drift about only slowly across the region. It may clear Lochaber, although later in the day, some of the showers will be heavy and move only slowly to give local thundery downpours.

Cloud on the hills?

Very extensive overall

Most areas cloud covered, particularly morning. Typical base 600m, but patches from just above glens upwards. Through the day, breaks will develop up to perhaps 900m, but higher summits will rarely clear.

Chance of cloud free Munros?

10%

Sunshine and air clarity?

Isolated pockets of sun only. Extensive fog across the hills, especially morning, but visibility often good below cloud.

How Cold? (at 900m)

6 to 8C.

Freezing level

Above all summits.

Planning Outlook for all mountain areas from Friday, 24th May, 2013

Remaining cold most the coming week - although the coldest conditions will be tomorrow and Friday. There will be freeze thaw cycles on higher Scottish summits, and on higher tops further south, temperatures often only a couple of degrees above freezing point. Total precipitation will be small, but there will be snow showers (often rain or hail on summits from S Scotland southwards), and into next week, occasionally fronts will bring several hours of rain and low cloud. Overall summits will often be cloud free, and the visibility excellent.
